My record collection confessions (part 1)
When Sex Leers its Inquisitive Head, Peter Wyngarde (1970)

I recently bought this album, recorded in 1970 by Peter Wyngarde, the man who played the fabulous novelist/detective Jason King in the British TV series of the same name (the character started out in the late 60's series Department S, and was so popular that he got his own eponymous spin-off).

Wyngarde is a fascinating guy. When at the height of his Jason King fame, he was inevitably approached by RCA Records to make an album. Rejecting the Frank Sinatra and Beatles covers offered to him, he went for full artistic freedom and produced one of the weirdest, kind-of-concept, kind-of-experimental albums of its time, with various situations of love and sex being the rough theme running through the album. Wyngarde approached the project with a sense of tongue-in-cheek playfulness, but this seemed to go over most people's heads upon release, and the LP was never given another release beyond its initial pressing. The inclusion of a track called 'Rape' probably didn't help, either. Fortunately, it's widely available on CD (which beats paying silly money for it on eBay).

Wyngarde's strengths in this album are the fact that he never attempts to sing (hello Shatner), and the frankly awesome quality of the music (the intro to the album's first track 'Come In' sounds Daft Punk-esque, and Wyngarde's delivery of 'Jenny Kissed Me' and 'Neville Thumbcatch' are simply mellifluous). I will definitely be playing some of the tracks on future shows.

Jason King TV intro

Oh yeah, and he also played Klytus in Flash Gordon.

All I need is for Jason King look-a-like Ray McVay to cover the album and my kitsch metaverse will collapse in on itself.

Yay!

Good news, Diversion fans! There will be a 2-hour show on Friday the 21st of September, from 14:00 - 16:00. This is part of Subcity's FM broadcast, the frequency being 106.6. I'm sure the show will be on Listen Again as well, so expect the usual playlist and links when the show goes out.

As for the show itself, I'll put together something special and (hopefully) more professional. I've been itching to do new shows for a while, so this show WILL mark the return of regular Diversion output.

See you then!

Diversion: the huge invisible update

Hello all,

You may not notice it, but I've just finished a very long and boring update on the site. All my Subcity shows are now coming from the 123-drive server, which is a lot more stable than whatever Subcity is using to stream its shows from.

I haven't edited the shows in any way, so you can hear them in their original truncated, glitchy, 96k form (hey, I'm really selling myself here!). Moving the shows to the 123 server also means that I can share the files with anyone else who is also a member. Contact me if you want MP3 copies of any of the shows. Or you can still go to Subcity's Listen Again page and download the shows if you're a bit nifty with right-clicking and selecting 'Save As' when using Media Player to listen to the shows.

I'll eventually put up links to the shows from Subcity's server again, but the most important thing was making sure people could actually listen to my shows!

As for new shows, well, the plan was to have them out by now, but I've been hit with a bunch of technical issues. The good news is that I'm moving into a new flat soon, and once I've moved, I'll have a much better setup (including an internet connection!) for producing new shows. Since I don't have a move in date yet, I can't give a date for new shows either, but expect to see (and hear) new shows within the next month or so.

In the meantime, I'll continue to update on the usual random stuff, which hopefully isn't testing your patience too much if all you want is new shows.

If you have any comments or suggestions of what you'd like to hear in the future, please feel free to contact me with them. It'd make a nice change from all the Japanese porn and corporate spam that I get, anyway...

Mata ne,

Kaiser Tia

Happy International Left-handers Day!

Big up to all my fellow lefties out there. Go and buy a special can-opener or something (yes, there's even left-handed clothing, seriously). Personally, I've never felt the need for left-handed equipment or special treatment, but I do feel relieved that I don't live during the times when left-handers were forced to write with their right hands, or even burnt at the stake for being 'sinister'.

Fortunately, we live in more enlightened times, though I was disappointed when Nintendo made Link right-handed for the Wii version of Twilight Princess.

Happy International Left-handers Day, SNES-era Link!

Send me to prison!

It looks like a good deal - the prison is in the Philippines, so there'll be sun. Then there's the orange outfits and synchronised dancing to funky music. I wonder if they would let me keep my Space Channel 5 costume?

CPDRC inmates - Thrilling!

On a more serious note, it's good to see this kind of positive activity in the penal system. Witness the redemptive power of boogie!

And for afters, here's an Indian version. Dare I say that it's just as good as the original?

I wish I'd written that!
Margaret Robertson, one time editor of elitist twat video game magazine Edge, has written a fantastic piece on the BBC website about the highs, lows, and brain-numbing dullness of video games. It's worth a read.

State of Play: Why I Play Games

She's also got a blog for more video-game related musings.

And not a Frag Doll in sight, thank goodness.

Wanted: summer
Okay, it rained all day yesterday. All day. Non stop. Anyone is Britain will know that this has been a dire summer, with the wettest July since records began. Not long now until Seasonal Affective Disorder is endemic. Does anyone remember just how good that bright warm thing in the sky feels like? Here's a drawing to help you identify it:

No bright happy sun in real life, unfortunately. Here's a picture of my back garden earlier today to prove it.

Drull.............

Reasons to go to the toilet in Japan...

That's toilet, not restroom - bloody Americanisms making image searches more complicated, grumble, grumble.

Anyway, you'll be relieved to hear that toilets in Japan are no longer going up in flames, instead, there's a mystery man leaving money in them now!

Sadly, there is no word on whether the Golden Bathtub has been found.

Funny how there's actually quite a few places on the net dedicated to public toilets (though the majority is porn, sigh):

The obligatory Wikipedia link

Restroom ratings

Tokyo Toilet Map

World Toilet Organization

World Toilet Day is on the 19th of November, incidentally. Start planning your celebrations now!

On a side note, I'd like to draw attention to the similarity between Japanese toilet slippers and Crocs...

I've never been able to take Crocs seriously because of this. Japanese tourists must find it hilarious.

Great news!

Silent Hill 5 has been announced!

Here's the teaser trailer...looks like there's going to be even more of a Jacob's Ladder influence in this one.

And yes, Akira Yamaoka is doing the music - hurrah!

On a side note, I came across this when I was doing an image search for this update:

My Little Pyramid Head

The only bad news is that there's going to be a second movie.
